The catalog of the photographic exhibition of the works by Libera Mariotti and Maria Filosa, exhibited in May 2025 at Spazio Arteria in Milan.
These photos, by the two authors Libera Mariotti and Maria Filosa, can tell a story or instead be understood in their expressive singularities. They are indeed fragments of an existential mosaic that in some ways had a common course in the two lives. Roots, naked bodies, images from psychiatric wards, gestures, scars, tears, glimpses. Each of the two photographers modulates according to their own different lived experience, both stylistic and educational, yet united by the same ability to disturb or move: images of strong emotional impact that, like life, leave no escape.
The sensitivity of the two artists, marked precisely by the suffering of their living, reveals what often is not expressed, not noticed, does not want to be seen. Paradoxically, despair does not appear because in photographing they manage in their own way to transform the subjects, metamorphosing events. They manage to suspend mystery from its drama, crystallizing in an irreverent serenity the things and facts of the world, recomposing the mosaic like archaeologists at work.
(from the preface by Christian Nanti)
A mosaic of fragility, strength, and memory.
Photography and images as a necessary act to understand oneself and heal.
